Common Pressure Relief Challenges

Swelling or Contracting

Changes in temperature, humidity, altitude and vacuum can create a pressure differential within a sealed enclosure, causing the battery casing to swell or contract. This can make it difficult to achieve the required relief pressure in an emergency.

Limited Space

Battery enclosures offer limited surface area and are often installed in confined spaces. Fitting breather vents and rupture discs separately increases costs and takes up more space.

Cell Propagation

A damaged or malfunctioning cell can quickly destroy an entire system due to a chain reaction (thermal runaway). This can rapidly spread from one battery cell or enclosure to the next, leading to catastrophic explosions, fire, damage and injury.

Managing Flameout

By-products of thermal runaway may include large amounts of flammable gases. Managing the flames from an outgassing event is an essential safety consideration for battery designers, particularly on board ships and submarines.
